Akira Anime From Creator Katsuhiro Otomo Reportedly In The Works

Akira fans will have something new to look forward to outside of the upcoming live-action movie, insofar that at this past year’s Anime Expo creator of the popular 1982 manga series (based on the unfinished 1979 Fireball project) and 1988 anime, Katsuhiro Otomo, will help with producing a new anime based on the Akira franchise. Yes, it looks like the 2020 Olympics that the manga and anime predicted may be accompanied with the release of brand new Akira media.

If you don’t know, I’m a big Akira fan and to hear this news makes me happy but cautious because it’s “current year.” However, given Otomo’s personality and how he strives for consistency and perfection, hopefully, the new anime carries on his iconic style as seen classics like Robot Carnival and Magnetic Rose.

Besides that, the genius — that can illustrate complex imagery and add some mad environmental emotion (which includes background characters and movements) — will be working on some new Akira stuff.

According to YouTuber Mr. H Reviews, he offers some insight on what’s going down regarding this Akira revival project:

If you didn’t watch the above video, Otomo-san was extremely busy during his visit to L.A at Anime Expo 2019. He’d announce the continuation of the Akira franchise with a new anime series, a third film (feature-length) connected to Orbital Era, and the upcoming release of a 4K edition of Akira.

Sadly, though, and something I’m not looking forward to is the live-action Akira film — that’s still in the works — given that the live-action remake has undergone several failed attempts to be produced, with at least five different directors and ten different writers.

Hopefully, just hopefully, this new anime series keeps the Gamelan sounding music and won’t be a woke mess that uses flash animations and 3D mixed with hand-drawn art. Although that’s my wishful thinking, the truth will likely unveil itself sometime soon.
