Voidpoint Interactive and 3D Realms ended up getting blindsided this past spring by a lawsuit from the heavy metal band Iron Maiden. The lawsuit alleged that the upcoming retro-styled FPS title was infringing on the Iron Maiden property. Well, after some retooling and reconvening, it appears as if Ion Maiden will not become known as Ion Fury, and it will launch on August 15th for PC next month.

The news was broadcast both in the form of a tweet and a brand new trailer that 3D Realms and Voidpoint rolled out on July 11th, 2019.

The two minute trailer houses some additional gameplay, showcasing the main heroine, Shelly, killing, shooting, and blowing things up in a completely overrun Washington D.C.

The action is pretty fast and rolls through rather quickly, but we do get to see Shelly having to overcome laser grid puzzles, using mines to take down cultists, blasting baddies apart with a shotgun, and navigating Build Engine-designed levels that look like they come right out of 1997. Of course, since they had to completely redo the name it meant that the previous big boxes that they were planning on rolling out for Ion Fury – once named Ion Maiden – had to be axed. So now the new pre-order boxes have Ion Fury on them instead of Ion Maiden.

The whole lawsuit nonsense rolled out back during the tail end of May, with 3D Realms attempting to defend themselves from the suit.

However, it appears as if they didn’t feel like fighting it out in court against the legendary rock band, and instead decided to just change the name and call it a day.

This also calls into question what will become of the home console version of Ion Fury? Back in October of 2018 it was announced that later into 2019 the game would arrive on Xbox One, PS4, and Nintendo Switch. But now we’re only seeing a release date for the PC version. So I’m not sure what’s going on behind the scenes but maybe they’re focusing on the PC version first, and then if all goes well and there are no more threats of a lawsuit, they’ll focus on getting digital and physical versions of the home console versions up and on for the general public?

The year is still young…’ish. So it’s possible that we could see Ion Mai – oops, I mean Ion Fury on the Nintendo Switch before 2020 rolls around. As much as I would like to get it on PC, I’m duly focused on building out my Switch library with as many physical copies as possible, this way I don’t have to worry about a company pulling some kind of Communist bullcrap and taking away all my digital games like what happened to that PS4 gamer who bought a bunch of digital titles and then had them revoked when Sony nuked his account.
