The Farm 51’s Chernobylite is the company’s next endeavor, a horror-style survival game set in the heart of Chernobyl. At this year’s GamesCom event in Cologne, Germany, the developers rolled out 17 full minutes worth of gameplay for the crowdfunded title, giving gamers an idea of what to expect from the upcoming game.
Back in April, the Kickstarter campaign took place, gathering up $200,000 over a 30-day period from 3,350 backers.
Back in the spring they showcased some small bits and pieces of the gameplay, while constantly drawing comparisons to GSC Game World’s world-renown S.T.A.L.K.E.R. series. Well, this latest 17 minute demo showcases a lot more, and you can check it out below, courtesy of IGN.
The demo starts with the main character, Igor, joining two mercenaries into a facility.
The beginning part of the demo sees Igor and the two mercs heading into the facility – by Igor hopping the fence and the other two taking the sewers.
Players control Igor who moves through the environment to make his way into the facility. The early parts are basically just common stealth-oriented gameplay.
Thankfully the game allows you to lean with the left and right bumper, a feature that seems absent from too many shooters these days.
After making it into the sewers, Igor whips out a counter and players are also given access to up to three other quick items.
We don’t see any other items in use. Instead the player presses a button, activates an alarm, and makes their way way into a radioactive room to acquire chernobylite to power a reality-altering device that allows them to travel between rifts in reality.
A man in a black mask kills Anton while Oliver and Igor escape through a rift. Oliver and Igor end up separating, with Oliver exiting through a rift to deal with an injury he incurred at the hands of the man in the black mask.
Igor, meanwhile, travels through another rift back to the day of the Chernobyl disaster to search for his missing fiance Tatyana.
Later on in the demo we see that Igor managed to acquire a pump-action 12-gauge shotgun. He meets up with a guy named Sashko. The demo ends with Igor using a detonator to blow up some towers.
The demo ended before Igor got to shoot at anything, and none of the action that we did see take place was gameplay oriented, so it all felt kind of… shallow.
The Farm 51’s previous outing, Get Even, was an interesting game but veered closer to the likes of being a walking simulator rather than a traditional first-person shooter. I’m sure people who wanted a really good story-oriented experience were probably put off by the action-stealth sequences, while the people who wanted a right proper shooter were put off by all of the walking-sim sequences.
We’ll see if The Farm 51 can strike a better balance with Chernobylite. A lot of gamers are looking forward to a new kind of S.T.A.L.K.E.R., and so if they can manage to capture that kind of freedom and unpredictable intensity, then Chernobylite might be worth keeping an eye on.
The sci-fi, FPS-RPG is due out this fall on PC. You can wishlist the game right now over on the Steam store ahead of its release.
