Canadian publisher Little Beaver Games and developer Team B announced that they have a new game in the works set to enter into Early Access on Steam starting November 5th, 2019 called Invasion 2037.
The third-person survival title is set in the near future, just as the name implies. You’ll be fighting through a dystopian landscape where robots with vaporizers roam around, undead zombies are out to get you, and deadly soldiers are ready to blast your head off.
Luckily, you’re equipped with melee and projectile-based weapons that enable you to fight back against the scattered smattering of enemies that litter the open-world sandbox.
You’ll need to gather up supplies, craft new equipment, acquire stronger weapons to venture into dangerous zones, and commandeer vehicles to make traveling much easier. It’s like a cross between DayZ and Generation Zero. You can see what the gameplay is like with the trailer below.
So let’s talk about the good before we get into the bad.
Being able to blow off a kid’s head is an interesting addition. We don’t see that often in games.
The character models look pretty good. They’re tall, muscular, fit, and look utilitarian.
The weapon mechanics look serviceable, with the firing and handling coming across with a sense of weight and impact. The reactions of the zombies to high powered weapons looks violently satisfying with just the right amount of gib.
However, there’s also plenty of bad in the trailer, too. The running and movement is stiff and disjointed; a lack of animation blending makes it look like an asset store flip the way the characters move, especially when they click into place to perform actions such as opening trunks or prying open doors.
The AI isn’t particularly bright either, and they don’t seem to have very complex path-finding instructions, nor are there large swarms on-screen at anyone time.
However, maybe with a little bit of tender, love, and care during Early Access we could see more AI refinements, better path navigation, improved swarming, better player-character animations, and other improvements to make the game feel more fleshed out.
Invasion 2037 is scheduled to enter into Early Access on Steam starting November 5th, 2019. You can wishlist the game right now or learn more about it by visiting the Steam store.
