[Update 11/12/2019:] According to reports, Disney did not censor Dumbo as some had originally reported. They did censor Toy Story 2, and the Michael Jackson episode of The Simpsons. (thanks for the update info Steve)
[Original article:] Disney will be censoring a number of films that make their debut on Disney+ according to multiple reports. This includes the classic 1941 Dumbo, Toy Story 2 and Song of the South.
Bounding Into Comics picked up the news from a CNBC report, where they went through some of the changes and censorship that would take place for the films that Disney has plans on airing on the Disney+ streaming service.
As noted by CNBC in their piece…
“The Jim Crow character from the original “Dumbo” will be edited out of the film version that appears on the streaming service. Also a post-credit “blooper” scene in “Toy Story 2” in which the prospector character Stinky Pete is interrupted while offering two Barbie dolls a role in the next “Toy Story” film — suggestively taking one of the Barbies’ hands in his — will also be removed.
“Additionally, the live-action “Lady and the Tramp” coming to Disney+ will reinvent the “Siamese Cat Song” with the help of singer and songwriter Janelle Monae.”
The real tragedy is not allowing people to see Song of the South.
The film isn’t available in any distributable capacity within the U.S., thus limiting multiple generations to any sort of access to the film.
Why exactly is it so reviled? Because, according to the article, it showed the plantation system in a positive light, and some people perceived elements of it to be “racist”.
According to Bounding Into Comics, Disney’s head honcho Bob Iger tried to dissuade shareholders from pressuring Disney into redistributing the film, stating that while it would net them some financial gain, it wouldn’t “sit right” with some people today…
“Back in 2011, Disney CEO Bob Iger explained the decision to not release Song of the South noting the film “wouldn’t necessarily sit right or feel right to a number of people today.”
Iger added, “It wouldn’t be in the best interest of our shareholders to bring it back, even though there would be some financial gain.”
Essentially the issue is Social Justice Warriors, who would yell and complain and petition to get Disney shut down or the film pulled by going after shareholders, people’s livelihoods or anyone else they could attempt to get deplatformed in order to prevent people from seeing the film.
Worse yet is that Disney is completely converged, so it’s no surprise that they agree with the Social Justice activists in censoring material that people might want to see, including the Jim Crow character from the film Dumbo.
Yes, they’re retroactively censoring content from their older works; effectively erasing history.
This is something that Cultural Communists do in an attempt to subvert how people think and rewrite history.
