Japanese developer Good-Feel Co., announced that their top-down, 3D action shooter, Monkey Barrels, will make its way to the Nintendo Switch starting November 7th. The game will be available as a digital-only release on the Nintendo eShop for $14.99.
The game is somewhat inventive insofar that players take on the role of a monkey in a post-apocalyptic Japan, which is now being controlled by a mega-corporation called Crabbenwold Electro.
Crabbenwold has managed to exterminate humanity after the home appliances they created become animate and go on a killing spree. Years after the extermination the animals are living peacefully in their own village until Crabbenwold’s CEO, Echizen Kanida, captures Kotetsu and others, forcing the monkey Masaru to go on a weapons-filled adventure to get them back.
This is where players come in, taking control of Masaru through 22 different levels, acquiring dozens of different weapons and items to help aid Masaru through the action-packed quest to get his friends back.
The hook for the game is that Masaru has a total of 98 different types of weapons and items to acquire, with two primary weapon slots that can be used for all manner of destructive projectiles, and two secondary slots available for explosives, defensive power-ups, and other miscellaneous items.
The actual gameplay is like a cross between classic top-down shooters and bullet-hell vertical/horizontal scrolling games.
The art-style was specifically designed to mimic the arcade titles of old, fusing lo-fi 3D with 16-bit sprite-themed textures.
In addition to the single-player mode, there’s also a six-player PvP mode that will be available out of the box, where players will compete in a Banana Scramble to collect as many bananas as possible before time runs out. The player with the most bananas wins. Obviously, you can utilize a wide range of different weapons to take down your opponents and steal their bananas.
