Samurai Shodown Heads To Nintendo Switch In Early 2020

SNK announced that Samurai Shodown is getting ported to the Nintendo Switch. The game will feature both TV and handheld mode compatibility, along with the option to play head-to-head against another player in the tabletop mode using the two Joy-Cons.

The Switch version of the game is scheduled to launch during the first half of 2020, more specifically during the first quarter. No release date has been made available yet.

However, SNK did roll out a trailer for the game featuring a look at how the visuals will appear in the handheld mode. It’s certainly not bad looking. You can check it out below.

That’s one of the benefits of going with a more stylized aesthetic instead of trying to rely solely on the uncanny valley effect of achieving “realism”, which is what a lot of other AAA games suffer from… especially titles like Star Wars: Jedi Fallen Order.

The Switch version contains 16 playable characters, as well as additional DLC characters, such as
Rimururu, Kubikiri Basara, Kazuki Kazama, Hisame Shizumaru, and Wan Fu.

To help spice up the game’s availability on Nintendo’s little hybrid that could, SNK is also throwing in a pre-order bonus that includes the pocket edition of Samurai Shodown! 2.

You can expect to see the game make its debut on Western shores for the Switch for $49.99 both at retail and via digital download.

I would like to see more of the game running on the Switch, especially in TV mode to get an idea of what the specs and performance are like. The handheld mode can be iffy for some games, but usually you can tell what sort of corners have been cut when playing the game on the big screen. So far the inked outline filter and crosshatching shader is still in effect, which gives the game its own unique visual flair compared to everything else on the market.

Hopefully they’ll be able to retain the 60fps gameplay in both handheld and TV mode.
