Kadokawa Games announced that Metal Max Xeno: Reborn is heading to the Nintendo Switch and the PlayStation 4 starting March 26th, 2020. The third-person action shooter game combines tank-oriented gunplay with third-person exploration and combat.
The action-RPG’s debut trailer was spotted by AllGamesDelta after it was uploaded to the official Kadokawa Games YouTube channel.
Originally I thought that this was some kind of fan-made game given that the graphics look kind of dated and the physics for the enemies and vehicles are quite stilted, but when they revealed at the end that this was coming to the PS4 and Nintendo Switch, I was somewhat taken aback.
The game series has been around for decades as a post-apoc JRPG. It started on Nintendo’s systems, made the leap to the PlayStation, headed back to Nintendo’s handhelds, and now it’s finally on both the PS4 and the Nintendo Switch.
Metal Max Xeno: Reborn takes the original Metal Max Xeno that launched in 2018 for the PS Vita and PS4 and turns it into a real-time action-RPG.
All the previous games in the series were turn-based titles, where you had to rely on grinding out levels and tactical turn-based skills.
I can almost see why the game looks as janky as it does, it’s because the genres have certainly gone through a significant changeover since the last outing.
I don’t know how well the game will do as a pseudo-Earth Defense Force style game, but for everyone who missed out on the series before on mobile devices or the PS Vita, at least you’ll be able to try it out when it launches on the Switch and PS4 in March… in Japan.
They also have plans on releasing Metal Max Xeno: Reborn 2 in 2021 as part of the 30th Anniversary celebration, which is detailed over on the official Metal Max Xeno website.
