White Wings, Adult Visual Novel Blasts Past $10,000 On Kickstarter

Pureworks’ White Wings managed to accrue more than $10,000 without much of a marketing budget or any support from major media outlets, and the Kickstarter campaign still has 30 days to go. So if you didn’t know that this project was currently being funded, you can jump in on the action if it fits your fancy.

The hook for White Wings is that it makes use of the Japanese middleware suite, e-mote. This allows 2D animations to have procedurally generated reactions where they react to what’s happening in the conversation based on a prefabricated library of emotions and reactions.

You can get a short glimpse of what that looks like in action with the test video below.

Beyond that, White Wings will be fully voiced in Japanese and it will feature more than 24 original CGs, along with an R18+ off-site patch for the eventual Steam release (assuming Valve allows it on Steam).

Valve did allow the Steam store page to go live, but whether or not they actually allow Pureworks Japan to release the title on the platform is a whole other story.

As we’ve seen recently, even all-ages versions of visual novels were banned.

However, the developers are confident that Steam will allow the all-ages version of the game on the platform, with Pureworks writing on the Kickstarter page…

“Hello, everyone! We are a Japanese company called “Pureworks”, and are experts at making visual novels with animation character sprites. This time, we have brought you the first game we have developed: it is called “White Wings”!

“This is a story about love and humanity, and it focuses on a slightly warped love triangle.

“In this game, we use the E-mote animation system to make character sprites! Next year, the game’s official version will be sold on Steam!”

So far the community is all-in on White Wings. They love the concept of the romance visual novel making use of the e-mote system, they like the artwork, and they’re really excited for some of the stretch goals.

Some of the stretch goals include a famous Japanese singer doing the opening theme song at $13,000, and additional animations for the CG sequences at $17,000.

They’re gunning for English dubs at $21,000 (but by gosh I hope that’s not the case), and full animations for all the CGs at $38,000.

I would say forfeit the English dub and just go for the animated CGs at $21,000. I don’t think any real VN fans would care too much about having English dubs in their Japanese-made visual novel.

Anyway, if you’re interested in supporting White Wings, you can do so by visiting the official Kickstarter page.
