One of my favorite new IPs of the generation – or of any generation, for that matter – is One Legged Seagull’s Super Indie Karts. The game combines a bunch of popular indie characters from other titles into a retro-karting experience that hearkens back to the Golden Age of gaming. The latest update for Super Indie Karts has restored the the Battle Mania mode, but now it’s also compatible with local split-screen play.
The update actually took place back in the late fall of 2019, but unless you were paying close attention to the Early Access page, it’s something that you could have easily missed.
The Battle Mania option comes with three different game modes, and nine different maps. Many of them are obviously inspired by some of the more popular maps from the Mario Kart 64 era.
The three map styles include Super Arenas, Ultra Arenas, and Cage Arenas. There are also three modes, which includes Egg Crackers, where you have to protect three of your eggs from being destroyed by your opponents. There’s Shroom Hunters, where you have to hunt down and capture as many shrooms as you can before your opponents. And Jewel Grabbers, which is a race around the arena to grab as many jewels as possible, using items and power-ups to knock the jewels out of opponents and be the one with the most jewels at the end of the timer in order to win the match.
The best part about it is that the new Battle Mania update is also compatible with Steam’s new Remote Play feature, so even though the game doesn’t have built-in online multiplayer support, you can still invite some of your buddies to play with you via the remote play feature.
You can actually see the remote play feature in action courtesy of Dennis el Azul, who streamed some direct capture footage of Super Indie Karts via remote play.
The actual race doesn’t get going until about two and a half minutes in at the 2:34 mark.
However, once the action gets going, it’s fast and furious.
The downside to remote play is that it doesn’t allow for as many players to compete against one another as online multiplayer, like with Mario Kart 8 Deluxe or Sonic Team Racing (not that anyone is playing Sonic Team Racing).
Still, some options are better than no options.
The Battle Mania mode also arrived shortly after One Legged Seagull updated the game with the Knight’s Cup, so there’s an extra GP mode to tackle in addition to the battle mode being restored.
If the game suits your fancy it’s definitely worth checking out and a ton of fun to play. You can purchase a copy from over on the Steam store for just $14.99.
