Overpass Trailer Previews Differential Lock, Mechanics For Hill Climb Challenges

Bigben Games and Zordix Racing released a new trailer for the home console and Epic Games Store timed exclusive, Overpass. The game is about taking buggies and 4x4s across rugged terrain as quickly as possible in order to score a top spot on the leaderboard, but it’s nowhere near as easy as it sounds.

The three minute video covers one of the simpler tracks in the game’s line-up, which includes scaling a rocky hill laced with mud and slippery gravel. The first section of the track is simply about following the path, avoiding the large boulders and attempting to make it to the top, but it’s not quite as easy as it sounds.

You can see the game in action with the trailer below.

When he reaches the layered rocks along the anticline, he’s unable to proceed any further. He activates the differential lock, showcasing how the game will allow you to utilize different vehicle mechanics in over to overcome some of the challenges.

As mentioned in the video, more advanced tracks will have multiple routes, different ways to overcome different challenges, and a variety of techniques that players can employ to garner the best time possible on each track.

Also, as showcased in the video, you can’t just rely on one type of drive-train mechanic for all obstacles. You lose a lot of steering capabilities with the differential lock on, so you’ll need to use it wisely when you find that you keep slipping down a pathway or are unable to maximize the torque to climb over a rock sheet.

One thing that’s stressed repeatedly in the video is that you can’t just overcome every challenge by slamming the accelerator and attempting to throttle past every rock, boulder, mud puddle, and incline. You’ll have to deal with slippage, losing grip, and risking sliding down the hill or mountainside due to a loss of traction. It’s about precision, timing, and placement.

This obviously isn’t your typical racing game, and it’s likely only going to garner a niche audience looking for this particular kind of challenge. My biggest gripe is the fact that it’s an Epic Games Store timed exclusive. Otherwise I like the concept of veering off into a sub-genre rarely explored when it comes to racing games.

You can look for Overpass to launch on the Xbox One, PS4, Nintendo Switch, and on the Epic Games Store on February 27th, 2020. You can learn more by visiting the official website.
