Back in late 2019, we reported that the Chinese boot-licking company, Blizzard, wanted to make an Overwatch cartoon or anime. Well, it looks like plans for that are still in motion alongside a Diablo show, too. In other words, the two IPs owned by Blizzard are still gearing up to manifest as animated shows.
It seems as if Blizzard really wants to branch off into the TV and movie sphere seeing that the company partnered up with Tencent Pictures to make the 2016 flick Warcraft.
Although it’s been four years since the Warcraft movie, according to a recent report, it looks like Blizzard will go as far as to make two animated pieces based on its intellectual properties that will more than likely feature current year propaganda.
We learn this from website GameSpot (archive.org), which uncovered what Nick van Dyk is up to on LinkedIn.
The site has found that van Dyk — co-president of Activision Blizzard Studios and producer on the Netflix animated series Skylanders Academy — is continuing the process of turning the aforesaid games into shows:
“According to van Dyk’s description of his position within Activision, Diablo is getting an animated adaptation “rendered in anime style,” which is currently in pre-production and will release worldwide through Netflix.”
The same concept for the Diablo anime applies to the Overwatch cartoon:
“Further down, van Dyk mentions that he “developed and sold an animated series based on Blizzard’s Overwatch franchise,” alongside his creative partner.”
As said last year, many people could do without another social justice title spreading itself around the world like a cancerous disease. However, Blizzard wants to cash-in on its portfolio of IPs by turning them into TV shows and cartoons, and it looks like it’s getting closer to doing just that according to van Dyk’s LinkedIn.
With all of that said, expect in the next couple of quarters to hear more about Overwatch and Diablo turning into animated shows.
