Greenland Trailer Has Gerard Butler Trying To Escape From Apocalyptic Asteroids

Gerard Butler seems to enjoy saving the world from doomsday scenarios in recent times. A few years ago he was in the movie GeoStorm, where he was fighting to preserve the Earth from some climate disasters. This time around he’s fighting to save his family from an extinction-level event involving killer asteroids.

As goofy as the headline sounds, the movie itself from STX Films and Thunder Road is actually pretty cool looking. The two-and-a-half minute trailer gives away a lot of the film, and they really could have scaled back on how much they showcased, but it does depict a somewhat more grounded take on a family trying to survive a killer asteroid shower.

Butler isn’t taking to space or detonating nukes using a sci-fi drill on one of the devil’s floating space turds. Instead, he’s just trying to get his family to Greenland.

You can check out the trailer below, courtesy of Nickel Filmes.

It reminds me of the late 1990s flick Deep Impact.

The film starts by teasing that there are going to be some asteroids passing by Earth, but then the news begins to change and things become a bit more dangerous, as news reports indicate that the fragments are not as small as they originally thought.

The escalation continues when major cities start getting wiped off the map in an Armageddon-style facial from an angry asteroid.

That’s when Gerard Butler puts his butt into hero gear and decides to get his family out of Dodge and into Greenland, ASAP.

Instead of the movie simply being about dodging asteroids and avoiding explosions (though there’s plenty of that) the film follows more of the breakdown involving society and how everyone begins to panic, loot, and destroy as their final days are upon them.

It’s a proper take on things given that we see it happening already with Corona-chan, with hoarders and looters even though things aren’t even that bad… yet.

I thought this was going to be as goofy as some of Roland Emmerich’s classic disasterpieces such as 2012 or The Day After Tomorrow, but instead it’s a little bit more self-aware despite being goofy.

If the movie business wasn’t in the tanker I imagine it would be well worth taking the family to go see it, given that it appears to be pozz-free and I don’t see any degeneracy in sight from the looks of the trailer, but they could always sneak that nasty stuff in there unbeknownst to most commoners.

Greenland is due out in 2020, but for some reason STX Films have been hitting certain channels with copyright strikes for whatever reason.
