The Ascent, Dystopian Cyberpunk Co-op ARPG Launches This Fall For PC, Xbox Series X

Swedish development outfit Neon Giant and British publisher Curve Digital announced that the dystopian, cyberpunk action-RPG The Ascent is set to launch on PC, Xbox One, and the Xbox Series X this fall.

The game is a four-player, isometric action-RPG made in a similar vein to Reikon Games’ Ruiner. Now unlike CD Projekt Red’s Cyberpunk 2077, they aren’t claiming that their game is standard-fare cyberpunk but rather dystopian cyberpunk. What this means is that the fictional world of The Ascent is steeped in the kind of degeneracy that has brought near societal collapse, unbridled violence, and corporate tyranny. It’s a kill or be killed environment.

The hook for the game is that those being oppressed by the corporatists are looking to make one last shot to attain freedom by ascending from the pits and drudges where the proletarians are fettered under duress.

You can check out the debut trailer below, highlighting some of the customization, the violence, the weapons, and the four-player co-op.

Essentially Neon Giant’s isometric ARPG is like a futuristic, dystopian version of Diablo meets Neon Chrome, or maybe like a twin-stick version of Deck13’s body-horror series, The Surge.

As explained in the press release by Tor Frick, art director and co-founder of Neon Giant…

“We wanted to create a sci-fi RPG where players can play in the way they like, building up their character with cyberwear, augmentations and looting in a story-driven environment,”

The Unreal Engine 4-powered title will also allow gamers to play through the campaign in single-player, so if you don’t have friends or you don’t like people, you don’t have to worry about co-op.

One neat feature of The Ascent is that it also sports a double-aim mechanic much like My Friend Pedro, so you can attack multiple enemies from different sides at once. That’s pretty cool.

You can look for The Ascent to arrive this fall for PC, Xbox One, and the Xbox Series X.
