NieR Re[in]carnation Trailer Previews Turn-Based Combat

It’s unfortunate that Square decided to make a new NieR entry but then relegate it to mobile devices. Specifically iOS and Android devices. The game is scheduled to launch later this year in Japan, but no Western version has been confirmed much less a release date.

Leading up to its release there was a brand new gameplay trailer rolled out featuring some of the exploration and combat.

It’s interesting because NieR: Re[in]carnation draws back to the classical style of JRPGs, utilizing a multi-party system and turned-based combat. You can check it out in the trailer below.

Even though Square Enix is on the Traitors of America master list, I do have to admit their marketing team did a superb job with putting the trailer together.

The atmosphere elicited through the environments are at times breathtaking and awe-inspiring. There’s some great camera work on display along with the haunting use of the soundtrack to help bring the world of NieR to life… for mobile devices.

Later into the trailer we finally get to see the turn-based combat on display, which features up to three party members being able to utilize what looks like two different skill options in wave-based combat.

I am curious if you’ll be able to swap out the skill tabs in the combat menu or if each character is designated their own attacks/specials and you’re just stuck with them?

Based on the few times we see the combat in action, it looks like you can either upgrade attacks or swap them out, but I guess we’ll have to wait to find out more. Also, there’s the typical options to either fast-forward through the battles or have the CPU take over with the auto-battle option.

As mentioned, the game is due for release on iOS and Android devices this year in Japan. No Western announcement has been made yet for NieR: Re[in]carnation.
