SNK Corporation announced that Samurai Shodown will be receiving some free DLC this August, specifically August 5th. If you own the game you’ll be able to play as the character Gongsun Li at no extra charge.
Gogsun Li is a character from Tencent’s Honor of Kings mobile game. She’s free to download for those who own a copy of Samurai Shodown due to a partnership that Tencent has with SNK.
The bunny-themed Chinese warrior sports tall ears, pom pom shoes, and fights with an umbrella.
SNK released a new trailer for the free DLC, which you can check out below.
Gongsun Li’s fighting style is mostly defensive rather than offensive. She has a lot of counter attacks and zone-controlling moves to keep her opponents at a distance, whether it be anti-air, ground-counters, or normals.
Majority of her attacks rely on zoning her opponents and keeping them away from her, which is probably not going to be appealing for those who like to play fast, furious, up close and personal.
Unfortunately the game still isn’t available on Steam, which means that the DLC will only be free for those who own a copy of Samurai Shodown from the Epic Games Store, or if you sailed the high seas.
SNK made a lot of right moves in recent years with the way they brought back King of Fighters and Samurai Shodown, and especially with how they really took an original direction with the art-style for Samurai Shodown. However, they also had some serious missteps by aligning with Tencent, a known arm of the CCP, and the Epic Games Store, who is unsurprisingly being propped up by Tencent as well.
I imagine SNK is using those partnerships to fund their new projects without having to rely on deep-pocketed marketing or corrupt media journalists to spread the word about their games, especially since they include a healthy dose of fan-service, which has been outlawed in today’s AAA gaming industry.
