Physics-based destruction is one of the least utilized features in today’s era of gaming, despite the fact that hardware is more than capable of supporting fully realized destructible environments. Few games afford gamers the ability to construct or deconstruct as they see fit, with the kings of the genre being Minecraft, Terraria and Starbound, but Tuxedo Labs is working on a game that takes the concept to the next level with Teardown.
The sandbox first-person shooter/builder puts players in an area with a bevy of tools at their disposal to create or destroy their way to success. Essentially you’re a thief, and your goal is to find a way to your target, and make a getaway.
While this sounds simple, you’ll have to be creative with how how you build and/or destroy in order to complete your objective. You can use vehicles, explosives, and even fire to burn, hammer, blow-up, or shoot your way to success. You can check out a demonstration video below to give you an idea of what to expect.
This is basically like Hitman meets Thief meets Minecraft.
I like the concept and I like the idea of destroying the environment to create new pathways to get in and get out.
I do hope that there’s also a decent combat loop to the game, because just blowing up the environment and fleeing the area without any sort of opposition will get boring pretty quick.
There’s a lot of potential for Teardown, but it’s still a ways off from release. Hopefully they have a decent selection of maps, weapons, and vehicles to use when it’s time for the game to launch.
Teardown is scheduled to launch on PC via Steam at some point in 2020.
