Nick Rowland’s Irish crime drama, Calm With Horses, originally came out back in 2019. However, the film was repacked with a new name called The Shadow of Violence and is now scheduled to be rolled out on July 31st, 2020 in the U.S., as the gritty and foreboding The Shadow of Violence.
The trailer is a well put together piece themed around a family steeped in the underworld of crime, particular a former boxer who works as a bruiser to help make ends meet. He roughs up some people here and there and attempts to help his lady take care of their kid. Unfortunately, things go south for Douglas “Arm” Strong, when he’s elevated from enforcer to hitman and he’s introduced to a whole new world of hurt and pain.
Douglas is faced with a moral dilemma when he’s tasked with killing a rapist, but it’s a lot easier said than done.

This looks like one of those taut, slow-burn crime dramas that eventually turn into a thriller, a little bit like the highly underrated Scottish flick, Calibre.
Usually the films that ground themselves in the process of realism are the ones that standout the most. It’s what made Taxi Driver, Blue Ruin, Green Room and Pusher feel so heavy and foreboding at times. You were never really sure what was going to come around the corner next, and no one was really safe.
The Shadow of Violence seems to carry a similar kind of tone with it, which could make it a nice sleeper hit for the ages.
As mentioned, the film already released over in Europe last year, but if you missed it under the title Calm With Horses, you can check it out Stateside under the apropos appellation of The Shadow of Violence.
