Mark Toia’s Monsters of Man may sound like some kind of high-brow sci-fi flick, but in reality it’s a low-budget action-thriller featuring a bunch of well-animated CGI robots adopted by a PMC sent into to kill a bunch of hostage-takers as a field test for military use.

The secret mission turns even bloodier when the robots complete their task but are then given a bonus mission to wipe out all of the civilian witnesses who saw them massacre the kidnappers. Little did they know that one of the hostages is actually ex-special forces, and this leads into a true test of wits, brawn, and hydraulic power as man takes on machine in a fight to the death.

Hands down, I would have to say that this film really could have benefited from a little more star power. While I like Neal McDonough and he’s usually quite apt for playing sleazy corporate douche bags, the special forces guy should have been someone like Scott Adkins, Michael Jai White, Jason Statham, or Luke Goss.

I will say this, though, the movie looks fairly interesting as far as the action sequences in the jungle are concerned. I love the mannerisms of the robots since they’re more attuned to how actual combat robots would behave in the field: exacting with their movements, precise in their actuation, and very methodical with their execution.

It’s nice to see that the filmmakers understand that aspect of robotics and applied it correctly in the film.

The downside is that everything outside of the jungle sequences look quite cheap. The acting is obviously sub-par and the set designs are quite lacking.

Nevertheless, if the film delivers some bloody-gory robot action and moves at a decent enough pace, it might not be too bad a watch. You can look for Monsters of Man to become available via digital and streaming services come December 8th, 2020.
