Riot Games is considering launching a women’s League of Legends global esports circuit, similar to its Valorous Game Changers initiative. Riot has reportedly considered such a move internally before, but today’s report that G2 Esports has signed a women’s League of Legends team has advanced the idea, according to Esports News UK sources.
Although there are rumors of a women’s circuit, the date the league will debut is yet unknown. Riot is thinking about creating more isolated competitions for female players in addition to a global course, but they are still in the planning stages. There isn’t presently a women’s League of Legends circuit offered by Riot Games. Over the years, there have been a few independent, women-only LoL tournaments, including FemaleLegends at DreamHack, ESWC Paris, and the GirlGamer Oradea Festival EU LoL tournament. Although this wasn’t the official women’s Worlds competition, the winning team went on to contract with G2, and a world final is planned for early 2023.
LOL Competitions
University competitions for League of Legends and Valorant players identifying as women and non-binary are also organized in the UK for students.
Riot’s North American LCS first introduced the Game Changers concept. However, it emphasizes seminars and mentorship more than competitive games (though there was a one-off competitive bootcamp event). In this article for Nerd Street in November 2021, Riot clarified why the LCS program was not as extensively advertised as Valorous Game Changers, claiming that Riot “doesn’t want women to feel pressure or toxicity publicly.” Riot has also announced its plans for Brazilian women.
Sources claim that after the G2 announcement, the likelihood of Game Changers appearing in the EU League of Legends has been “definitely” discussed further. G2 esports announced the signing of the women’s League of Legends team.
Partnerships to Encourage Female Players
Riot Games announced different partnerships to encourage the female League of Legends (LOL) scenario. The novelty aims to make the MOBA competitive and more welcoming for women who want to find their space in different areas.
The developer will support projects Inhouse Jinx for women who want to play professionally, Goddess Cup, a women’s tournament in partnership with Gamers Club, and ReveLAH Casters, aimed at those who want to work with narration and commentary in official competitions.
According to Riot Games, all the learning from Game Changers, an incentive program for Valorant’s female scenario, and conversations held with other players helped the company pave the way to take this initiative with League of Legends. The company also assured that new projects would be revealed via CBLOL’s Twitter and Instagram in the coming months. See more details of the partnerships below:
Riot Games will take different approaches to support projects searching for new talent. For players looking for competitive matches, Inhouse Jinx is the primary option: it is a Discord server where tournaments with prize pools of more than BRL 4,500 will take place. The server has a general ranking and will have rewards for the top ten in each stage of the tournaments.
In Addition To Sponsorships
The support initiative comes mainly from the Brazilian territory, which is now seeking national and international partnerships to bring tournaments inside and outside the country.
Another initiative is the Goddess Cup, which will be expanded with the partnership. The competition will take place between May 24th and 29th, have a total prize pool of R$10,000, and be open to any interested female team, with no link restriction. Registration is now available and can be done through the gamersclub website.
From mouse and keyboard to a microphone, ReveLAH Casters will help women develop as League of Legends narrators, commentators and analysts. Currently, the project has more than 30 women, but the expectation is that the partnership can offer even more vacancies and also increase the training content for this area.
In addition, project participants will be narrating matches at Inhouse Jinx in partnership with Layze “Lahgolas” Brandão and Maria “Fogueta” Júlia, casters of the Brazilian League of Legends Championship (CBLOL). The narrations will occur on the so-called “Jinx Day,” held during the Inhouse Jinx season.
