Injustice 2 EGX 2016 Video Details Gear System, Stat Modifiers

A new video for NetherRealm Studios’ Injustice 2 was released during this year’s EGX in Birmingham, England, covering a lot of different gameplay options, character combat, as well as the much talked about Gear system.

During the demonstration we learn a heck of a lot more about the Gear system. Essentially during every fight you’ll unlock random gear just like an RPG. You can then equip the gear between each match, or stockpile the gear and customize the gear in the customization screen. You can check it out in the video below, courtesy of YouTube user Punish.

As you play through the game, win or lose, you’ll be able to unlock new content for each of the characters.

Being able to unlock new content for each character will grow your stash of equipment. There are thousands of different items, each with their own stats and properties. Just like a loot and grind RPG, the different items will have different effects. You’ll also be able to choose from five different slots for the character along with a color scheme for the equipment, as indicated in the image below.

The Gear system could be the perfect way to keep the game’s replayability intact. I do wonder how well this will work out in the multiplayer aspects, though. It will be interesting to see what the multiplayer landscape looks like when high-tiers start regulating the matchmaking and playing field. Will there be a bunch of HP buffers? Or will some players go for lop-sided damage effects? Very interesting possibilities will be available with this new Gear system, so props to NetherRealm for trying something fairly new with the setup.

Dimps had used a similar system with Dragon Ball Xenoverse, but the fighting in that game is very different from the twitch-skills required in a game Mortal Kombat or Injustice 2. So stat stacking in a twitch game will open up doors for some newbs to try to take down the elites, while also potentially giving the elites an even bigger gap between the newbs. We’ll just have to see how it all plays out when Injustice 2 launches next year for PS4 and Xbox One.
