Greedfall Is A 17th Century Magical, Monster Hunting RPG

Inspired by Baroque art from 17th century Europe and set during the early 17th century on a mysterious island where settlers, pirates, bandits, and magical inhabits are all trying to fight to survive, Greedfall will attempt to mix in traditional role-playing with monster hunting and lots of looting.

Spiders and Focus Home Interactive recently unveiled Greedfall during a press event where Focus Home Interactive did a short showcase of what they have in the pipeline. The ambitious, mixed-world RPG is currently in development and scheduled for release in 2018 for PC, PS4 and Xbox One.

They unveiled a new trailer for the game that you can check out below.

The trailer is put together with expert precision. It shows the desperation of one of the locals fleeing from a British invader. She doesn’t get far after getting blasted in the stomach by his rifle. As he moves in close for the kill she lets out a devilish grin; a giant forest monster comes barreling up from behind, knocking the soldier off his feet.

The clip ends as the soldier whips out his sword in preparation for some hardcore, one-on-one, monster fighting action. We don’t get to see it, though.

Spiders has let loose enough information to indicate that choices will matter a lot in the game, essentially giving the impression that this will be similar to titles like The Witcher or the original Mass Effect trilogy.

Spiders has been known to try to follow in the footsteps of CD Projekt Red and BioWare, especially with their last outing, The Technomancer. So it seems they’re going to be back at it again.

Some previews have labeled Greedfall as a sort of Colonial-themed RPG. Brief snippets of concept art back up that assertion by showing crude villages itching to become landmarks on foreign soil.

The biggest takeaway from Greedfall’s reveal has been the trailer music. A lot of people really like “The Wolves” from Killer Track featuring Keeley Bumford. There’s even a video just for the music.

The premise and concept look good.

I can’t help but think that maybe this would make a better movie than a game, though.

A lot of the comments on the YouTube video noted that the real hook for something like Greedfall will be in its presentation. So Spiders will have to work hard to ensure that the gameplay mirrors, in some way, the presentation of the teaser trailer, sort of how Dontnod managed to capture the Gothic and desperate nature of a foreboding London in both the cinematic trailer and actual gameplay. Theme consistency across marketing material and the actual game goes a long way with keeping people hooked. So we’ll see if Spiders can do that with Greedfall when it releases in 2018.
