Styx: Shards Of Darkness Dev Diary Highlights Crafting, Stealth, Co-op

Cyanide Studios released a new developer diary explaining a bit more of the design process behind Styx, some of the people he encounters, as well as the gameplay mechanics behind the goblin’s stealthy antics.

The video is five minutes long, covering the snarky attitude of Styx, and how he makes rather morbid jokes about situations, or ridicules some of his enemies.

The character is definitely not the typical protagonist, insofar that he’s far from a good guy.

Styx’s smarmy attitude fits in well with his goblin demeanor. In between cracking jokes and stealing objects, players still need to ensure that Styx stays stealthy.

One of the biggest factors in determining whether or not you’re successful in Styx is based on how you navigate the environment. Since he’s small little goblin who relies on wits, quick reflexes and hiding in unlikely places, it means it needs to avoid engaging in any serious, hard-hitting combat with heavily armored foes, otherwise he’ll end up as mince meat.

Some of the interlude dialogue from Styx when he dies is just hilarious… but the developers designed the levels in a way to help players reduce and minimize factors that lead to death. For instance, they encourage players to take advantage of the verticality in the game by climbing up high.

However, even if you prefer staying low and keeping the enemies within eye sight, they offer a variety of skills and crafting items that you can use to help out along the way.

They also briefly talk about the cooperative mode in the game, where two players can attempt to work together to get through the missions. Styx is no walk in the park, though, and it will require a lot of teamwork and patience.

Styx: Shards of Darkness is due for release on March 14th on the Xbox One, PS4 and PC.
