InXile Entertainment announced that Torment: Tides of Numenera, the spiritual successor to Planescape: Torment has officially launched for the Xbox One, PS4 and PC.

A lot of the gaming community are up in the middle of the night tweeting and schmoozing across social media spaces talking about the launch of Torment. The crowdfunded game managed to rack up $4 million in funding, and with the sales of Wasteland 2, inXile was able to flesh out Torment and make it into the game that they always wanted.

The home console version was published in partnership with Techland, but PC gamers can look to get their hands on the title via Steam or GOG.com.

Torment features a story based around an extravagantly made world that stretches across time and space. Players will embody a character who will start as a blank slate and evolve over the course of the game based on the decisions and choices of the player.

There are three different character classes to choose from, including a warrior, wizard and rogue, but they’re called Glaive, Nano and Jack in Tides of Numenera. There’s also the familiar dialogue tree system that most RPGs both new and old use, and this is where players will interact with other NPCs and establish the actions that define their moral compass.

So far, a lot of people who have played Torment: Tides of Numenera during its Early Access phase have praised the game for its gameplay, mechanics, storytelling and depth.

Essentially inXile Entertainment has been working on titles that pick up where Black Isle Studios and BioWare left off with the older Baldur’s Gate titles and Planescape games from the late 1990s and early 2000s. A lot of progress in those CRPG-style titles just kind of came to a halt by the time the OG Xbox entered the picture and games like Knights of the Old Republic became the standard for which RPGs were defined.
