Dawn Of War 3’s Pre-Order DLC Incites Rage From Fans

If there’s one thing you don’t do for your game ahead of its release is promote paid-for DLC for your game. It’s a cardinal sin to tell people to start saving or putting money aside for extra DLC bonuses for a game that’s months out from release. Well, Sega and Relic Entertainment tried that with Dawn of War 3, the Warhammer 40,000 real-time strategy game, which is due for release on April 27th.

In the newest trailer for the game, they reveal that there are three special pre-order bonus skins for the Eldar, Orcs and Imperium of Man. Gamers who commit to purchasing the game now will receive the three additional skins for Dawn of War III.

While the trailer itself isn’t bad, and we get to see the three main factions blasting each other to smithereens in their tools of destruction, the fact that Sega and Relic dared to advertise DLC almost two months before Dawn of War III is set for release set the community awash with rage.

The dislike bar tells the story more than words ever could.

Gamers were also quick to put into words what the dislike bar represents, with YouTube user The Cheshire Cat writing…

“A skin pack before the game is even released. Why am I not surprised? In before the inevitable comment where someone replies with “But it’s cosmetic, you don’t need to buy it! I love throwing my money at developers!””

Technically, it’s throwing money at the publishers.

Jppsta360 called it a “wallet trap”, expressly taking digs at Sega and Relic with the following comment…

“Oh look, the Sega walletrape with shitty business practices begins. I would preorder if the game didn’t look like it was taking steps in the wrong direction with the gimmicky bubble cover system.”

Snarfindorf took a shot below the belt, wishing for the zombified corporate corpse of THQ to come back from the grave and bite out the jugular of Sega’s infrastructure…

“Fuck you. Are you going to put a micro transaction store to ruin DoW like you did with CoH? This company is a shell of its former self. I wish THQ never went under.”

Dawn of War 3 is due for release on April 27th. I wonder how much this DLC pre-order bonus will actually set them back? Some people think that these things happen in a vacuum and gamers pass by this sort of controversy, but there’s a rolling pile of steaming dung trailing the upcoming release of Mass Effect: Andromeda and a lot of that ties into one of the designer’s racist tirades, leading a lot of people to claim that they’re canceling their pre-orders. So we’ll have to wait to see if things hit a snag with Dawn of War III thanks to the DLC practices.
