Nippon Ichi Software’s A Rose in the Twilight recently launched on Steam for $19.99. The grim-noir side-scroller tells a tale of a girl named Rose who is cursed with a thorn on her back. She ends up inside of the wallowing presence of a destitute castle filled with traps and deadly challenges, and she must befriend a giant to help overcome various obstacles preventing them from escaping.

Throughout the game players will need to use Rose’s powers to absorb blood and re-infuse the blood into the environment, which is devoid of color and time. Putting the blood into objects will bring back color as well as solve some of the puzzles standing in her way.

As players traverse the castle, along with the aid of the giant, they’ll attempt to uncover the secrets behind the castle and the grim truth that rests at the heart of the place.

The game has a pretty cool looking art-style that fits the methodical puzzle-and-platforming pace. You can see what A Rose in the Twilight looks like with the trailer below.

Surprisingly the game doesn’t have a lot of user reviews.

The reviews that are there are rather glowing of the game, highlighting that the art and the gameplay are great but that people may not like the puzzle-solving if they’re heavy into platformers, or they may not like the platforming if they’re heavy into puzzle-solving. It’s a game with acquired tastes and perhaps that may be a little more than what some casual fans might be expecting from a 2D side-scroller.

One of the other things they praised about A Rose in the Twilight is that the game’s story unfolds over the course of vignettes as players attempt to piece together what the castle is like and how the victim’s died.

The game looks interesting enough, and it seems like something fans of Limbo or Heart of Darkness might take a liking to.
