Syfy really seems to be working hard to get away from their crappy image that they had during the early and mid aughts. Some of their shows really seem to try hard to be good, and one of those shows that could end up being a surprise hit is Krypton, a prequel series to the Man of Steel.

I wasn’t entirely convinced that DC would produce yet another TV show when they have so many teen dramas on CW, but it looks like they’re trying to steer clear of the crappy teenage angst syndrome with a very high-quality outing with Krypton. The trailer looks pretty high quality actually. In fact, it looks more like a movie than a television show.

There are some cheap looking sets here and there, but overall it looks a lot better than I was expecting.

I do hope that they manage to capture the political and bureaucratic intrigue that setup the opening of Snyder’s Man of Steel. In fact, I thought the whole Krypton sequence with Michael Shannon and Russell Crowe was fantastic. Those were the most coherent, consistent and cogent aspects of the film. I remember thinking that I could watch a whole movie based on Russell Crowe’s depiction of Jor-El.

Anyway, the show will supposedly follow the exploits of Jor-El’s father, Seg-El. The show will be written by the hit-and-miss talent of David Goyer. According to an interview with Collider, he mentioned that it’ll be a more paced show where big blockbuster moments will be “picked” rather than thrown out all the time…

“In terms of production value, you have to pick your moments,” […] “should we make the show, there will definitely be some big moments. It won’t be wall to wall visual effects every single moment, and we’ll also be digging into the characters and the culture a lot more.”

It sounds promising… but then again it’s also David Goyer… but he did do a decent job with the Dark Knight trilogy… but then again it’s also Syfy… but they did do a decent job with The Expanse. I guess this is one of those “wait and see” kind of deals.
