Cockroach Inc’s The Dream Machine has been in development for the past eight years and the game is now finally coming to its explosive conclusion with the release of Chapter 6, the final entry in the handcrafted adventure game.
Publisher The Sleeping Machine have been helping Cockroach output each of the chapters for the game, which originally made its debut in a two chapter release back in 2012 on Steam.
With the release of The Dream Machine: Chapter 6, this will mark the final conclusion to the long-running adventure game that has spanned chapters being made available over the course of years.
So what took so long to finish all six chapters? And why did it take eight years to do so?
Well, the game is handcrafted from real-life natural materials, including clay, broccoli and other practical effects. The stop-motion adventure title is a surrealist adventure through the creepy and the fantastical. Players take on the role of Victor, who must journey into the deep recesses of his neighbors’ dreams and nightmares in order to same them from the fate of the Dream Machine. Similar to the likes of Persona and the works of David Cronenberg, the game fuses the fears and horrors of real-life trauma with the high-fantasy element the likes of which only the human mind could conjure.
You can get an idea of what this disturbingly creative game is like with the trailer below.
The game certainly has an art-style that distinctly separates it from every other game on the market.
The closest comparisons would be The Neverhood and Armikrog, but The Dream Machine takes a step into the bizarre.
That’s not to mention that the high definition detail of the clay-made characters and environments really stand out when rendered in HD within the game. For instance, that one sequence where Victor enters into the mouth of that one person looks creepy as… well, you can fill in the blank.
You can currently purchase all previously released episodes of The Dream Machine leading up to the release of the sixth and final chapter. You can get each chapter for just under $6.00 or you can buy the full package (on May 11th) for $16.96.
