PS4 owners will be able to gain access to the physical standalone release of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Remastered. The standalone release will feature 16 multiplayer maps from the original Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare and the full campaign mode. The game will be available both physically at local retailers and digitally via the PlayStation Network starting June 27th next Tuesday.
According to Brian Raffel, the studio head of Raven Software who helped with the remastered edition of the military first-person shooter, it was all about player demand, saying in the press release…
“It’s been an honor to bring this great title, which holds such a special place in our hearts, to a new generation of players,” […] “With Modern Warfare Remastered, we’re able to relive our favorite campaign levels and multiplayer moments in full HD visuals and remastered audio. No detail was too small, as the team pored over every aspect of development.”
This little propitiating bromide was followed up with an actual launch trailer for the standalone release of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Remastered. You can check it out below.
Originally Activision and Infinity Ward hitched the remastered version of the game to the deluxe edition of Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare. For $100 you could get Infinite Warfare, the season pass and the remastered edition of Call of Duty 4. There were reports that a large portion of Infinite Warfare’s sales was due to the deluxe edition, with a lot of people wanting to get their hands on the remastered version of the original next-gen shooter from Infinity Ward from a decade ago, but they were forced to pay the $100 to do so.
According to Destructoid, the deluxe edition was even out-selling the base edition of Infinite Warfare on Steam, showing just how much people didn’t care about last year’s sci-fi space romp where players traveled the galaxy trying to kill Jon Snow from the Game of Thrones.
Activision, ever the opportunist, figured they could cash in on the people not willing to lay down $100 for the remastered version of the 2007 FPS, and decided to release Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Remastered as a standalone.
YouTube user Mirage Uchiha seemed to sum up the general gist of some people’s thoughts rather nicely.
You can look for the game to launch on store shelves and the PSN store starting June 27th next week. The Xbox One and PC versions will launch shortly thereafter.
