Secret Base’s Streets of Red: Devil’s Dare Deluxe is a permadeath multiplayer, horror-themed beat-’em-up. The concept centers around blasting through the game as one of the six different playable characters, beating the crap out of everything that gets in your way while simultaneously avoiding the inevitable beckon of death.
The interesting part about Streets of Red is that the object is to get to the end of the game without permanently biting the dust. The only way to accomplish such a feat is by purchasing upgrades and life stocks in between levels to ensure that you can beat all the bosses and unlock that sweet, sweet credits scene. You can see what the gameplay is like below to get an idea of what the fighting and the visuals are like.
Now for the possible bad news: The game stars Jim Sterling.
As we all know, Jim Sterling has waffled back and forth when it comes to being an advocate for consumers. Corruption was worth overlooking when his buddies on the GameJournoPros were doing it, but it’s a cardinal sin when it’s doled out by mega-corps like Electronic Arts and Bethesda.
Nevertheless, the developers confirmed that Sterling both stars in and lent his voice to Streets of Red.
It looks like some of the people downvoted the trailer because they either weren’t digging Sterling starring in the game, or didn’t like the brown-scale aesthetic themed after the old green-screen Game Boy games.
Either way, there’s a bit of a mixed bag of reactions for the upcoming release of Streets of Red for PS4 and the Nintendo Switch.
Thankfully, it’s a fairly cheap game that only clocks in at $9.99. So you’re not tasked with putting a whole lot of coins into the coffers of Secret Base for their beat-’em-up.
