Star Citizen’s Area 18 Channels Some Blade Runner Cyberpunk Vibes

The latest update for Star Citizen in the Around The Verse episode covers the Drake Interplanetary Corsair, as well as some of the other community content that have cropped up during St. Patrick’s Day. Beyond the new Corsair being spotlighted and some of the community events, we also get a brief look at one of the sections of Area 18, which is kind of this grimy, Blade Runner-esque cyberpunk plaza with lots of neon lights, kiosks, and eateries sprinkled around the tube-tacular alleyways and pipe-laden streets.

The brunt of the video is centered around the Corsair, which is actually somewhat themed after the World War II Corsair. It also features the ability to fold up its wings to reduce some of its footprint when attempting to land in tight spaces.

The Corsair is actually spacious, giving gamers several different turrets on the front and the back of the ship. One of the unique aspects of the ship is that it has an asymmetric rear wing on the left side to help with maneuverability. The ship is classified as an exploration class vessel, which can house several crew members. You can see it in action with the video below.

Later into the video of the Around The Verse episode we also get a look at how the holographic lights are being implemented into the commercial area plaza. We see how the lighting artist creates a dynamic lighting flavor for Area 18 in ArcCorp, complete with physically based rendering so that the different colors from the different advertisements help give the area a nice color splash of electronic illumination, replete with dynamic reflections in the puddles on the ground and a nice hazy fog to compliment the cyberpunk vibes.

There isn’t too much else to discuss regarding that particular area, but before the episode wraps up they cover the props team working on implementing some really cool looking environmental  set dressings to give the crowded urban streets and compact alleyways some steel sugar and titanium spice.

Areia 18 is already looking and feeling more cyberpunk than Cyberpunk 2077.

The new Area 18 sector will be available along with some of the new ships in alpha 3.5.0, which is due out soon. You can also learn more about the development of the features by hitting up the developmental roadmap page over on the RSI website.
