George Miller Announces Plans To Work On A Mad Max: Fury Road “Furiosa” Prequel

It looks like director George Miller has come forth to announce that he is moving ahead with a standalone Mad Max: Fury Road prequel centered around Furiosa. The movie in question will touch on her time spent in the “idyllic Green Place,” why she was plucked from the Vuvalini, and how she became a “hardened warrior.”

The 2015 movie that prompted gamasutra.com to write to game developers to adopt cues from Mad Max: Fury Road underlines that Miller was out to reach social justice warriors without remorse. Here’s a source that the writer — who is a level 60 Social Justice White Mage — included in his piece regarding Miller’s process to portray females in the now half decade-old film:

“Feminism isn’t accidental [in the movie], of course. It’s a deliberate choice made by Miller, and he did bring in Eve Ensler, the playwright behind the Vagina Monologues, to work with the actresses on their characters.”

Nevertheless, Mad Max: Fury Road will have a prequel according to a new write-up by publication site nytimes.com. Additionally, the site notes that Miller hopes to make the Furiosa film once he completes the “Three Thousand Years of Longing” drama:

“So after we finish it [Three Thousand Years of Longing], and hopefully everything settles down with the pandemic, we’ll see what the world allows us to do with Furiosa.”

Moreover, Miller seeks to explore what Furiosa’s life was like in the “idyllic Green Place,” how she got separated from the “group of woman warriors” (or the Vuvalini), and how she turns into the character in Fury Road.

Something else that’s worth noting is that Miller has begun auditions for the lead role, admitting that the person poised to play Furiosa will have “significant shoes to fill.” In other words, it sounds like Charlize Theron isn’t going to reprise her role as the near-bold deformed Furiosa according to the director:

“For the longest time, I thought we could just use CG de-aging on Charlize, but I don’t think we’re nearly there yet. Despite the valiant attempts on ‘The Irishman,’ I think there’s still an uncanny valley. Everyone is on the verge of solving it, particular Japanese video-game designers, but there’s still a pretty wide valley, I believe.”

And speaking of the director over the upcoming Furiosa prequel, Colin Gibson — production designer — will make a return too. He, Gibson, tells the publication site that the 88 vehicles he built for Fury Road will be dwarfed by the prequel’s vehicular inclusion.

And lastly, cinematographer John Seale will return to help out on the prequel, which the film itself will more than likely feature social justice narratives like there’s no tomorrow.
