We have a ton of multiplayer games out there, but few of them really explore any kind of new territory or gameplay mechanics. Most are the same thing over and over again: Battle Royale, MOBA, or FPS. Occasionally we’ll get an RTS of sorts and maybe an arcade racer here or there. Taiwanese developer Freemergency Studio and publisher Another Indie hope to mix things up a bit with the game Retrograde Arena.
The concept of the game centers around multiplayer bouts where you’re equipped with weapons that blast opponents around the arena. Your weapons can’t kill your opponents, though.
The object of the game is to blow your opponent out of the arena, Smash Bros., style.
You’ll have a number of weapons at your disposal in order to complete the task, spread across three different game modes and multiple levels.
You can see what the gameplay is like with the trailer below.
Freemergency took to heart the name of the title and decided to give Retrograde Arena a retro look. There are neon lights, a synth soundtrack and a Tron-esque vibe to the motif.
You’ll have a number of different weapons at your disposal, ranging from shot guns and machine guns, to railguns and imploders.
As you make your way through the game’s levels and rack up points, you’ll be able to unlock new skins, thrusters, upgrades, and effects for your combat drone.
The best part about it is that Retorgrade Arena offers both local and online multiplayer support with up to six players, along with LAN play. Alternatively, you can go at it alone against AI bots… a rarity, despite in today’s industry being drenched in multiplayer games.
You can learn more about the or look for it to arrive on the Steam store in Early Access come May 28th.
