GhostWire Tokyo Teaser Sees Tokyo Under Siege By Paranormal Villains

Shinji Mikami and Tango Gameworks’ upcoming game GhostWire: Tokyo looks like a departure from the enclosed, claustrophobic survival-horror roots that the studio is known for. The teaser trailer for the game that aired during Bethesda’s E3 press conference was reminiscent of something you might have expected out of Kojima Productions.

There was a lot of striking imagery and visually poignant sequences featuring various paranormal entities roaming the streets of Tokyo after large swathes of people simply up and vanish.

You can check out the near two minute teaser trailer for the upcoming game below.

It starts with a bunch of Japanese people walking around the streets of Tokyo, but then they end up completely disappearing, leaving nothing behind but their clothes.

Some strange entities begin to appear in their place, looking like different kinds of specters or otherworldly beings from Japanese horror flicks.

We do see that there is a group of cripple-fingered spooks in suits with umbrellas who walk around making people disappear.

Later on we see that it’s not just them, but rather various types of monsters terrorizing Tokyo. We see a traditional looking ghost witch walking around who appears to be more foe than friend.

There are some Big Trouble In Little China-looking fellows wearing large wicker hats and donning bows and staffs, but there’s no way to tell whether or not they’re good or bad. This seems to tie into what one of the designers mentioned on stage during Bethesda’s E3 press conference, where she talked about players having to investigate and choose how to deal with each encounter before simply making a decision to dispatch the entity.

One of the more intriguing figures they present is a due in a half shawl with gloves on and a crying kabuki mask with a missing horn. Much like other works by Mikami, it’s a very symbolic design.

As mentioned, the character looks like someone straight out of Death Stranding. The color scheme is eerily similar too, and there are bodies floating up into the air as if they’re trapped in a hazy limbo. If you saw the image without any context or knowledge about where it came from, most people would probably assume Death Stranding.

As for the hero of the tale… he’s an unlikely looking dude. I could be wrong but he sure does seem inspired by the one street samurai getup for Hawkeye in Avengers: Endgame.

We see that the hero in GhostWire: Tokyo is decked out in a hoody with a bow and arrow set, along with some mysterious powers. You can check out the comparison shots below to see what I mean.

Anyway, the main hero appears to use a bow and has some special powers. We don’t know what all his powers are but we’ll likely find out as more info is revealed about the mysterious GhostWire: Tokyo.
