The U.S. NPD Group has released its chart for July regarding video games and sales. With that said, Sony and Sucker Punch Productions’ Ghost of Tsushima has topped said chart, meaning that it was the best selling game in the U.S. as of this year’s July.
Firstly, the U.S. NPD Group only tracks physical sales at retailers, where at times the firm receives digital data from publishers/developers, but this isn’t always the case with other companies.
For instance, Nintendo and Activision Blizzard do not provide digital numbers for all their stuff (this includes first-party digital sales and battle.net). Additionally, microtransactions, subscriptions, or things not related to actual game sales are not counted.
On that note, Take-Two confirmed to website gamesindustry.biz it had not supplied its digital sales data to the U.S. NPD Group for July.
Anyway, the new list via npd.com sits below showing Ghost of Tsushima at the top spot followed by the infamous Call of Duty: Modern Warfare and Paper Mario: The Origami King:
Last Week | This Week | Games |
---|---|---|
New | 1 | Ghost of Tsushima |
2 | 2 | Call of Duty: Modern Warfare |
New | 3 | Paper Mario: The Origami King* |
1 | 4 | The Last of Us: Part 2 |
3 | 5 | Animal Crossing: New Horizons* |
5 | 6 | Ring Fit Adventure |
4 | 7 | Mortal Kombat 11 |
6 | 8 | Mario Kart 8: Deluxe* |
8 | 9 | Super Smash Bros. Ultimate* |
New | 10 | Sword Art Online: Alicization Lycoris |
As always, the first number represents last week’s placement. The second number serves as this week’s placement, while “New” stands for a new entry on the above list. Although it’s not here, “Re-entry” means a title that has returned on the top ten list, and the asterisk (*) means digital sales on the Nintendo eShop are not included.
Interestingly, in one month, The Last of Us: Part 2 has dropped from the top to fourth place. On the UK sales chart, the game is no longer on the top ten, which means that interest in the game is dwindling quickly.
Sadly, U.S. goers seem to like the fighting game that identifies as Mortal Kombat 11, but contrary to that, it looks like the game isn’t doing that well given that it dropped from fourth place to seventh in 30 days.
Finally, the U.S. NPD Group will release its August numbers on September 14th, 2020.
