During the final minute of Nintendo’s half-hour Direct on March 8th, 2018, the company revealed that Super Smash Bros. is coming to the Nintendo Switch later this year. The game will likely be a port of the Wii U version of the game, which came out back in 2014. Then again, it might be an all new Super Smash Bros. built from the ground up for the Switch… but I tend to doubt that Nintendo has such a quick turn around, given that it was a six year gap between the release of Super Smash Bros. Brawl on the Wii and Super Smash Bros. for the Wii U.

During the teaser trailer at the end of the Nintendo Direct, we see that squid kids from Splatoon are doing battle. The duo stop their friendly bout involving paint splattering when an ominous Smash Bros emblem appears – burning with the dreadful ire of Mario’s fire flower, and casting a dark shadow of a battle-hardened Link over the battlefield. It looks like a much meaner Smash Bros, filled with thuggery.

While we have no idea what which version of Super Smash Bros is heading to the Switch – whether it’s brand new and built from the ground up or a straight Wii U port – we do know that at least the two squid kids will be added to the roster.

A lot of the standard pugilists from the past are also making a return, including King Dedede, Kirby, Bowser, Samus Aran, Link, Captain Falcon, Marth, and Kirby to name a few.

The hype levels went skyrocketing through the roof on social media, as gamers became super excited about the prospect of Super Smash Bros. finally coming to the Nintendo Switch.

I imagine Nintendo might be doing this to finally get the older versions of Super Smash Bros. off the FGC tournament circuits and finally push the Switch further into the inner sanctum of the FGC, where it likely hasn’t really tapped that corner of the market just yet.

No release date has been set for Super Smash Bros. on the Switch, but expect big things to be unveiled at this year’s E3 in Los Angeles, California.
