Ukrainian developers, Vostok Games, have announced that the Early Access version of Fear The Wolves will commence on August 28th next week. Steam gamers will be able to get their hands on the first-person, survival Battle Royale game, and then at some point in 2019 the full version will release on PC, along with a home console version for PS4 and Xbox One.
The news was rolled out as part of the GamesCom festivities taking place this week in Cologne, Germany, where a number of game announcements have been made, tons of new trailers and media have been released, including brand new gameplay footage of Vostok Games’ upcoming Fear The Wolves.
The Battle Royale survival title is like a mix between PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds and Vostok’s own Survarium. You can see what the game is like with the new trailer below.
The trailer did not go over well with gamers at all. Many downvoted it not because it looks bad or because it seems shoddy or because there’s anything wrong with the graphics, but because gamers are now fed up and tired with the over-saturation of Battle Royale games flooding the market.
We may not have seen a ton of news and announcements for Battle Royale games at E3, but in between E3 and GamesCom they’ve been flooding the newswires in healthy doses.
It’s unfortunate that the game is likely going to get passed over by a lot of people uninterested in Battle Royale games, because it at least attempted to combine some unique elements into the fold, including wild animals that hunt you and other plays down, either as lone hunters or in packs.
Vostok is also pulling the anomalies from their previous games and using them in Fear the Wolves, along with the circle of death being replaced with a radiation cloud.
As mentioned, there are some interesting elements at play in Fear The Wolves, but the survival sim and Battle Royale sub-genres are just all kinds of worn out right now.
We’ll see if Fear The Wolves can pick up and retain an audience when it enters into Early Access next week on August 28th.
