Don’t Starve Arrives On Nintendo Switch April 12th

Klei Entertainment announced that Don’t Starve is due for release on the Nintendo Switch starting April 12th. The game comes with a fully packed with previously released expansion packs, jammed onto a single cartridge.

The Switch edition includes the original base game of Don’t Starve, along with the Don’t Starve Shipwrecked, and Don’t Starve: Reign of Giants. Each expansion offers something a little bit different. The base game focuses on gathering supplies, building up a safe harbor and eventually attempting to make your way back home. The Shipwrecked expansion centers around scavenging small isles in a little raft, as you attempt to build a bigger boat, battle sea monsters, and eat plenty of cooked fish.

You can see what the game looks like with the trailer below.

The trailer is just a minute long, mixing in some of the game’s well-regarded animated sequences with actual gameplay.

Klei’s survival simulator was never really that visually taxing, so it shouldn’t have had to go through any extensive downgrades to run at a reasonable frame-rate in the portable mode on the Nintendo Switch.

Unfortunately they don’t exactly say what the spec differences are between the portable mode and the TV mode, but I would suspect that the game will likely run 1080p at 30fps in TV mode and 720p at 30fps in portable mode. It seems to be the go-to specifications for most games that aren’t racing titles on the Nintendo Switch.

I think the biggest sin of all is that this isn’t Don’t Starve Together, so there is no co-op mode included in this version of the game. That’s right, you’re going to be completely without the co-op provided in Don’t Starve Together.

This means that you’ll either have to wait for them to port the co-op version over or hope that they add it as a free update, but I tend to doubt that given that a lot of people really want the co-op version that they’ll give it away for free.

You can look for Don’t Starve to launch on April 12th on the Nintendo eShop.
