Mexican game studio Lienzo released a new behind-the-scenes documentary to take a look at the rarely talked about Tarahumara culture that inspired their upcoming adventure game, Mulaka, due out in 2018.
The north Mexican culture is said to be fairly overlooked when it comes to making appearances in popular media, which is primarily why Lienzo wanted to give them the spotlight as a celebration of their history and culture in the upcoming Nintendo Switch, PC, PS4 and Xbox One title.
You can check out the short three minute documentary below.
The video talks about the Tarahumara and how they’ve managed to isolate themselves from many other groups to retain their culture.
The video talks about how they have extremely high stamina, which fits into the game’s theme of having unlimited stamina so you can run for as long as you want. In the video they say that the myth was that the Tarahumara could run without tiring, which allowed them to chase down deer and eventually grab them after the deer tired.
The game also hopes to bring some locations to life that many gamers (and people in general) aren’t very familiar with.
Unfortunately we don’t get to see much of the actual gameplay, though. The main character is seen running through a colorful, orange-tinted world where tall mountains are present, waterfalls run freely, and the somewhat minimalist art-style attempt to bring the Mexican mythology to life.
Some part of the game looks quite similar to thatgamecompany’s Journey. The big difference is that there are combat mechanics in Mulaka for players to utilize. What we don’t see is how well the combat plays out.
If the game has a good mixture of platforming, exploration, and if the combat mechanics are solid enough maybe it could turn out fairly decent. We’ll have to wait to see more about the game to get a better judge about the quality of the gameplay. You can learn more by checking out the game’s official website.
