Epic Games recently updated Fortnite’s free-to-play Battle Royale mode with a new 50 versus 50 PvP option. The update for the mode won’t last long, though, as it’ll only be available for a limited time.
The free mode will only last up until Sunday, December 17th, 2017. It will be available for the PS4, Xbox One, and PC versions of Fortnite.
The 50 vs 50 mode also received a new trailer, showcasing what the chaos looks like in the open-world survival mode. Check it out below.
The trailer showcases what the mode looks like, as various players use shrubs to sneak into the bases, or build up fortifications on their way from one side of the playing field to the other.
There’s a whole lot of gunfire but not a whole lot of dying. I’m not sure if they were trying to avoid showing death and destruction in The Game Awards trailer or if they have no clue how to make their game look like the weapons have impact, but a lot of the footage is just kind of a lot of gunfire, a lot of running around, a lot of destroying things but nothing in the way that shows Fortnite to be a tactically engaging and satisfying PvP game.
I mean, once you see a shrub isn’t your first instinct going to be to destroy the crap out of it?
Anyway, the 50 vs 50 PvP mode for Fortnite’s free-to-play Battle Royle mode is currently available right now. During The Game Awards they revealed that since the mode went live in July that it’s amassed more than 30 million registered players from around the world, and that they currently have 1.3 million concurrent players logging in over the weekend.
It’s still hard to tell how long the engagement legs are for a game like Fortnite because right now it’s just kind of riding on the coattails of PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds‘ popularity. I’m curious how well this game will do in the public sphere come next summer? Will people still be playing it? Will the experimental new modes keep millions of people engaged? Will it evolve into something else? Or is this its final form? All these questions and more will be answered in the next episode of Dragon Ball Z.
