At this year’s Tokyo Game Show, Sonic series producer Takashi Iizuka talked about the development of the upcoming Team Sonic Racing and what gamers could expect from some of the features, as well as the inspiration for the creation of the game.

According to Iizuka, the reason he decided to make a team-based racing game was because he said that his son would be playing other kart racing games with his friends, and that only one of them could ever win while the others would get frustrated. Mario Kart instantly came to mind. Iizuka told the interviewers that he wanted a game where all friends could team up and feel like winners.

It’s not a bad concept really. We don’t get many team-based racing games and you practically count the co-op racing games on a single hand. There were games like Crash Tag Team Racing from way back on the PS2 and OG Xbox, and there was also Mario Kart: Double Dash on the GameCube. Beyond that team-based racers have been far and few between, with the only other notable co-op racer in recent times being Pixel Dash Studios’ Road Redemption, which has a four-player co-op campaign mode. So Iizuka wanted to focus on encouraging co-op based racing for this generation of gaming.

But there’s more to Team Sonic Racing than just co-op play.

The game will sport 21 different tracks to race through all of which are based on various properties of Sega.

In the video above they introduced the Wisp Circuit, Ice Mountain, and Market Street.

Some of the 21 tricks will be tracks inspired by existing tracks from Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing and Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed.

The game also features three character classes across speed, technique, and power. This is what makes up each team, almost similar to Sonic Heroes for the sixth-gen consoles.

The game sounds like it has a good concept but he major problem is that it looks kind of slow, especially compared to the rapid clip at which Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed played. Anyway, you can look for Team Sonic Racing to launch next year on May 21st, 2019 on the Xbox one, PS4, PC, and Nintendo Switch.
