NetherRealm Studios will bring Mortal Kombat to the Nintendo Switch for the very first time. Nintendo is basically getting serious about competing in this twilight era of eighth-gen, but don’t expect the game to look the way it does on the PS4 and Xbox One.
The announcement for Mortal Kombat 11 took place at this year’s Game Awards, where the trailer was introduced with a two minute reveal featuring Scorpion and Raiden duking it out on the battlefield with lots of blood, gore, impalements, and evisceration.
The only thing ruining the trailer is that there’s some completely out-of-place rap music that has soured the experience and stripped away from the presentation of the overall combat. You can check out the trailer below.
The trailer doesn’t show any actual in-game play but it does roll out some in-engine visuals. After Scorpion gets torn up by Raiden with his hand broken in half, his knee buckled underneath him and his head blown to pieces due to an electrical overcharge, it turns out that it was just an illusion, and the real Scorpion steps in to blast Raiden to pieces donning his original outfit from Mortal Kombat III.
The trailer also reveals that the game will launch on April 23rd, 2019 next year for Xbox One, PS4, PC, and Nintendo Switch.
There’s going to be a community reveal event set to take place on January 17th, 2019 but pre-orders are opening up as soon as December 7th, 2018, which is tomorrow for some people and today for most others.
I think more than anything it’s good to know that NetherRealm is coming back to a Nintendo platform and giving gamers a truly Mature experience, something that Sony is abandoning for the PlayStation platforms.
Nintendo Switch owners are the real winner here, because it’s showing that Warner Bros., and NetherRealm have a lot of faith in the Switch and its audience, something that Sony has abandoned in their own audience by instituting the new censorship policy even for Teen and Mature rated games.
