Monster Energy Supercross Behind-The-Scenes Video Outlines Photogrammetry, 3D-Scanning

A new behind-the-scenes video was released for Milestone’s upcoming, Unreal Engine 4-powered racing title, Monster Energy Supercross – The Official Videogame. The Italian studio takes gamers behind the scenes to showcase what they’re doing to bring the game to life, bring the riders to life, and how they’re approaching track design.

The core of the video is about how they approached the design of the graphics using a set of four rules, getting real by using photogrammtery for the maximum amount of realism. This includes drone-scanning the tracks for the most accurate representation of the track both in terms of scale and visual fidelity.

The second part of the rule takes that concept and also applies it to the depiction of the riders in the game, while the third rule is about using video contributions and FMVs for an immersive experience, and the fourth rule is about using 3D menus and designs so that the quality of life experience matches the in-game fidelity.

You can check out the video below.

With commentary provided by Ralph Sheheen, the official voice of the Monster Energy AMA Supercross and FIM World Championship, gamers get a brief look at what Milestone had to go through in order to bring the game to life.

We get a look at the various graphical technologies, and some of the characters and tracks that Milestone is implementing into Monster Energy Supercross.

It’s a bit of a shame that they don’t talk more about the time it took them to build out the tracks based on the reference material, or what their exact process and workflow was like after laser-scanning in the riders. It would have been nice to know how many people they devoted to clean-up and artwork, texture mapping, and those assigned to the final pass before it was render-ready.

Even still, gamers interested in Milestone’s process at least get a small taste of what’s to come for when Monster Energy Supercross launches for PS4, Xbox One, Steam, Nintendo Switch and mobile devices come February 13th, 2018 next month.
