E3 2018: Call Of Cthulhu Features RPG-Horror Mechanics, Upgradeable Skills

Focus Home Interactive and Cyanide Studios’ Call of Cthulhu is gearing up for release later on in 2018 for the Xbox One, PS4, and PC. The game is based on the Chaosium’s Call of Cthulhu pen and paper tabletop RPG. It’s set within the same world and follows many of the lore-specific narratives based around H.P. Lovecraft’s extra-dimensional cosmic horrors.

The game is set in 1924, and players take on the role of private investigator Edward Pierce, who is looking into the death of the Hawkins family on Darkwater Island, near Boston, Massachusetts. Players will have to talk to NPCs, search out evidence, look over clues, and attempt to uncover the conspiracies centering around cultists living in the area.

During this year’s E3, Focus Home Interactive rolled out a new gameplay trailer, and a new gameplay demo to discuss some of the features in the upcoming mystery-horror game.

The trailer is a cinematic showcase of the game, but it does later showcase some of the actual in-game play.

The game actually looks a heck of a lot better than you might have been expecting. I suppose after announcing the game back in 2016 they’ve had time to polish it up. Call of Cthulhu had a minor showing at least year’s E3, but this year Cyanide brought a lot more meat to the dinner table of information.

The trailer likely doesn’t make a whole lot of sense, but gameplay demo at E3 actually features real in-game play.

One of the things they explain is that the game is about making the main character go mad. They mention that since the game is based on the Cthulu Mythos, which always seems to rely on the main character going mad, it’s something that is an inevitability in Call of Cthulhu.

They also explain that the gameplay is not like Focus Home Interactive’s other Sherlock Holmes titles where you spend a lot of time examining clues and collecting items. The game starts with players delving into the mystery-investigation element, but later on it turns more into more of a role-playing horror game.

You’ll be able to upgrade skills such as occultism, investigation, and psychology that can help Edward uncover the mysteries surrounding the family’s death.

It’s not entirely clear if depending on your choices the ending will change, but I guess we’ll have to wait and see when Call of Cthulhu launches later this year for Xbox One, PS4 and PC.
