Power Rangers Movie Reboot Is Reportedly In The Works

It sounds like another reboot of Power Rangers is on the way, this time from the creator of the Netflix series The End of the Fucking World. The new movie will apparently be made to hit theaters and it’s unclear if this is going to be a direct tie-in to the 2017 reboot or if it’s going to be a reboot of the universe… again.

Deadline is reporting that Jonathan Entwistle managed to wrangle a position as director over the new Power Rangers film, which will be written by Patrick Burleigh.

The article also notes that the Hasbro subsidiary, Allspark, will be in charge of producing the film for Paramount Pictures and Hasbro Studios this time around.

Deadline noted that the last flick from 2017 was produced by Lionsgate and Saban Films, so considering that this is an all new studio helming the project with an all new director and writer in charge of the story, and with Paramount and Hasbro directly involved, it seems unlikely that the new flick will be a sequel to the 2017 outing. And it’s even more unlikely that it will be based on Adi Shankar’s “Bootleg Universe”.

The article seems to describe the new film as a reboot, which is still kind of weird given that the other movie came out just two years ago. Then again, it was kind of a flop since it didn’t even make back its budget in domestic showings, as reported by Forbes. Forbes also surmised that given the film’s poor performance it was unlikely that it was going to get a direct sequel.

So while this is still a studio reboot, it’s likely that the lore will also be rebooted since it would seem absurd that Universal and Hasbro would sign off on a brand new film to pick up where the LionsGate flick left off even though it wasn’t much of a success.

Hasbro also did something similar with the soft-reboot of the Transformers when they released Bumblebee back in 2018. While they kept some of the designs similar to the Bayformers series, the lore was changed around and they set the movie back in the 1980s. They also completely altered Optimus Prime to look like his original G1 iteration, and also changed how the Transformers ended up on Earth.

But this talk of rebooting Power Rangers as a live-action film is just that: talk. The film hasn’t moved into production yet and the studio is apparently still working out the details, so anything can happen between now and then.
