Live-Action Akira Movie Is Still In The Works, Releasing Much Later

The movie Thor: Love and Thunder has a release date of November 5th, 2021. If you are baffled by what that movie has to do with Akira the live-action adaptation, I’ll explain. Both movies have to share director Taika Waititi, in turn, this has resulted in pushing the Akira movie’s release date back.

I’ll tell it to you straight without any sugar-coating, I love the manga of Akira and have read all six volumes, and while I appreciate the manga over the movie, you can’t deny what the 1988 film brought to spectrum of filmmaking in terms of animation, imagery, color, and music.

That now brings me to the next part: the live-action adaptation of Akira. For those that have been around for some time know that these types of movies were in production and failed every time. And, of course, with most anime to real life takes having a sour track record, I have very low expectations of this film by Waititi being any good.

With that laid out, if you are unfamiliar with New Zealand born filmmaker, actor, and comedian, his work stretches from the terrible 2011 Green Lantern, to the 2016 Disney animated film Moana, to Marvel movies like Avengers: End Game and Thor: Ragnarok. The offshoot Jojo Rabbit is his latest release to hit the silver screen:

As it stands now, Thor: Love and Thunder is taking up the director’s time as per website digitalspy.com. The publication site makes mention of Waititi having to push back his film — based on one of Katsuhiro Otomo’s most recognizable works — by highlighting the director saying:

“Unfortunately, the timing with Akira [isn’t right], because we’ve been working really hard on the script, we had to keep pushing the start date for the shoot.”

Waititi continues:

“We ended up having to push it a couple weeks too far, which actually ate into the Thor schedule, because they were very close together. And then that got pushed again and again, and it just got too far into the Thor schedule to be able to make it work.

My first commitment was to Marvel to make that film, so now I’ve kind of had to take Akira and sort of shift it around to the tail-end of Thor and move it down a couple of years.”

Lastly, this means that 2021 and beyond are potential due dates for the live-action version of Akira. In other words, the dumpster fire in the making is being pushed back to drop all sorts of current year propaganda on us in the foreseeable future.
