King Of Fighters XIV Trailer Previews Team Japan

SNK Playmore released a new trailer for King of Fighters XIV, this time featuring the trio of Team Japan, which consists of resident King of Fighters protagonist Kyo Kusanagi, his friend Benimaru and their companion Goro.

The trailer covers the abilities and special moves for all three fighters, giving gamers a look at how each of the characters operate during a fight and how they can pull off their combos and special attacks.

Anyone familiar with the King of Fighters will instantly recognize many of the iconic moves from all three fighters. Benimaru seems to have undergone some slight changes in his gait and the way he executes his moves… they’re a little less… flamboyant than in previous entries of the series. Kyo is pretty much spot on to how he was in the 2D renditions of the title, along with Goro. You can check out the video below, courtesy of All Games Delta.

What happened to the Osaka theme? I was hoping for a throwback to the special Osaka theme from KoF ’98 and KoF 2002 but I guess we’ll just have to make due with this new synthesized version.

As far as playability is concerned, the speed of the game looks slick and on point. It’s always tough to tell exactly how a game plays and 3D games always handle differently than their 2D counterparts, with the exception of Guilty Gear Xrd -SIGN-. I still can’t get over how well Arc System Works knocked it out of the ballpark with that game. That is the game every fighter should aspire to when it comes to making 3D games play like sprite-based 2D fighters.

I’m now interested to see what counter-combos look like, how block breaks come into play and what sort of super-cancels can be pulled off out of punishable mishaps. Right now the fighting has all been fairly straightforward with a lot of demonstration style videos, but the real meat and potatoes is seeing top tier fights in action.

You can look for King of Fighters XIV to launch for the PlayStation 4 starting August 23rd.
