BioWare’s Next Game Will Be Online Action-Adventure; Won’t Be An RPG

Electronic Arts CEO Andrew Wilson let slip that BioWare’s next game will be an action-adventure game that won’t be an RPG. He also mentioned that the game would have an online component. This info was revealed during a conference call with investors.

BioWare’s general manager Aaryn Flynn also took to the BioWare website to explain further what they have in store, mentioning that they have a brand new IP they’ve been working on that isn’t Mass Effect, Dragon Age, Star Wars or Jade Empire. Flynn states…

“In 2012, we began crafting a new universe full of new characters, stories, and gameplay. Our ambition is simple: Draw upon 20+ years of development knowledge and lessons to create something fun and new for you to enjoy with your friends.”

Sounds like an online multiplayer action-adventure game… that isn’t an RPG. So we can automatically discount out anything remotely similar to Star Wars: The Old Republic.

This also means that it’s possibly a side-scroller or a over-the-shoulder game action title. Could BioWare be making a multiplayer rendition of something like Gears of War?

It could end up being a MOBA, but MOBAs aren’t adventure games. It could also end up being like Mirror’s Edge… but an online competitive game. But Wilson said it was an adventure game, not a racing game. So that counts that out.

Technically, BioWare could be looking at something like Assassin’s Creed multiplayer, or even a traveling survival game like Sea of Thieves. The possibilities are endless, but I tend to doubt that the creativity going into the game will be endless.

They have plans on revealing the game a few months from now, likely during E3. Wilson mentioned that the title will be out before March, 2018.

BioWare’s current focus is on getting Mass Effect: Andromeda up and out to the masses on March 21st for the Xbox One, PS4 and PC. Although, some people are reluctant to put their money into a product when one of the game designers has openly espoused racist views on social media while representing BioWare and Mass Efect: Andromeda.
