The Nintendo Switch has sold 105,000 SKUs over the course of the weekend in France. According to My Nintendo News, they managed to move nearly 10% more product in the opening sales weekend for the Nintendo Switch than they did back in 2006 for the original Wii.
The Wii managed to sell 95,000 units over the course of its opening weekend, shy by just 10,000 units of what the Nintendo Switch did last weekend.
The original report comes from Chloé Woitier at Le Figaro, where it was reported that the Switch has managed to become the best selling console for Nintendo in its opening weekend in France since the 1980s.
This contrasts the 330,000 units the Switch moved in Japan over the weekend, just shy of the 360,000 units the original Wii moved in Japan back in 2006 – which is interesting considering that the Nintendo Switch is $50 more than what the Wii launched at and it doesn’t come with a packed-in game like the Wii.
This follows up on the news that the Switch moved 80,000 units in the U.K.
We still don’t have any exact figures on how many units have been moved. According to Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime, there are 2 million SKUs out there for the month of March, so we’ll see how well that works out as we move through the move.
I’m a little shocked that Nintendo has yet to announce how many units they’ve moved in total. Vague estimates and comparisons are the only thing to go by, for now.
One of the biggest things helping the Switch is the launch of Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. However, one of the things hurting the Switch is the lack of accompanying software to help move units.
Nearly perfect scores from the media have made sure that marketing is being spread around for Breath of the Wild, and a lot of positive word of mouth is helping as well, but we still don’t know totalities.
I’m sure we’ll get some kind of figure by the end of the week.
