What do you get when you combine the resurgence of hard rock-synthwave with techno-horror and sci-fi action? Well, you get Seth Ickerman and Carpenter Brut’s space opera, Blood Machines.

The techno-horror flick is a sequel to their musical collaboration known as Turbo Killer. If you’re unfamiliar with it you can check out the music video below, which is all kinds of awesome, and helps setup the context for the teaser trailer.

The popularity of the video led the Frenchmen to Kickstart the movie for Blood Machines, garnering €185,133 in crowdfunding back in January. The upcoming film will be just under an hour in length and pick up where Turbo Killer left off.

The story centers around the soul of a ship that takes the form of a young woman. Two bounty hunters decide to track down the woman and understand her connection with the ship and the powers that she houses. The movie poster for Blood Machines gives you an idea of what sort of visual tone they’re going for with the film.

As you can see, the poster leaves little to the imagination when it comes to what sort of content will be featured in the upcoming film.

In order to get the neo-synthwave audience geeked up for the release of Blood Machines, Carpenter Brut and Ikerman released a teaser trailer for the film, featuring some of the special effects and a brief look at the cast. You can check it out below.

The movie is described as being a cinematic experience structured around musical excellence. This is likely going to be more of a space-opera than a space-opera, just without the actual opera.

Anyway, the special effects are spot on, and after watching Turbo Killer it was obvious that a film had to be made based on the concept. The palette and effects reminds me greatly of the upcoming Nicholas Cage flick Mandy.

Of course, the teaser trailer doesn’t hold back anything and it looks like there’s going to be plenty of blood and lots of nudity in the French-made sci-fi flick.

I love the fact that they managed to depict in the live-action imagery what was captured in the hand-drawn concept art. It’s freaking brilliant.

Visually this is such a throwback to so many great French artists from the 1970s and 1980s, such as Philippe Druillet and Jean-Claude Mézières.

It almost looks like a proper live-action recreation of something out of the Metal Hurlant series.
